The interaction between the magnets in the device and the external remote control allows Precise, adjustable and customizable stretching throughout the stretching phase. After performing the corticotomy and during the lengthening phase, the Precice implant is gradually lengthened according to the patient’s requirements with the portable external device, programmed by the doctor in advance
The patient’s lengthening prescription can be entered into the external remote control by the physician. When the desired length is achieved, the intramedullary rod continues to provide stability throughout the consolidation phase.
What are the risks of leg lengthening surgery?
As with any surgery, there are some risks associated with leg lengthening, and it is important to discuss these risks with your surgeon to determine if leg lengthening is right for you.
Possible complications include:
Blood clots – Patients are at risk of developing blood clots after orthopedic surgery, but there are measures in place at the hospital to avoid this.
Nerve and blood vessel damage – In some cases, nerves and blood vessels can be damaged, either at the time of surgery or during subsequent lengthening of the bone.
Infection – As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection. Because the PRECICE device is inserted into your bone, the risk of infection is very low, approximately < 1%. If you had a previous lengthening with an external fixator, the risk of infection would be higher. Your surgeon can discuss this with you.
Joint stiffness and soft tissue tightness – As the bone elongates, the soft tissues also stretch. The muscles become very tight and it is recommended to perform movements of the hips, knees and ankles. Physical therapists can teach you exercises to minimize stiffness.
Joint instability – Following lengthening procedures, there is a small risk of dislocation of a nearby joint.
Delayed union – This can occur if the bone does not form during lengthening or takes longer to consolidate. Other reasons for failure to gain the desired length relate to problems with the stretching of nerves, blood vessels, muscles and tendons.
Refracture – After removal of the device, there is a small risk of fractures in the long bone. If this happens, the leg may require another surgery or time in a cast; therefore, it is important to follow your surgeon’s recommendations regarding physical activities.
